  • The top of every cylinder has two holes that let out engine exhaust and let in air. The opening and closing of these holes are synchronized with the movement of the cylinder and rotation of the camshaft. A worn or broken timing belt disrupts this synchronization, causing a buildup of exhaust that is released as smoke.
