Extended Warranty Policies
Purchasing
When purchasing an extended warranty, keep the following points in mind for the best coverage and price.
- It’s generally best to purchase an extended warranty before your factory warranty expires, typically around 3 years or 36,000 miles. At this stage, your vehicle usually qualifies for “new car” coverage, which often provides broader protection at a better value than policies written for used vehicles.
- You don’t have to buy an extended warranty at the time you purchase your vehicle. Many reputable companies offer coverage independently of dealerships or car lots. The main advantage of buying at the dealership is the ability to roll the cost into your monthly payment—not necessarily better coverage.
- Look for warranties with exclusionary coverage, which protect most vehicle components except for a short list of exclusions. Non-exclusionary plans only cover parts specifically listed, meaning anything not listed isn’t covered.
- Avoid policies that require you to return to the dealership for warranty repairs. Having the freedom to choose a trusted independent repair shop gives you more flexibility and often a better service experience.
- Be aware that some extended warranty companies cap the labor rate they’re willing to pay, which may be well below the local average. If this happens, you could be responsible for paying the difference out of pocket.
- Also, pay attention to how deductibles are applied. Some warranties charge one deductible per visit, while others charge a deductible for each repair performed during the same visit—this can significantly affect your final cost.
- Keep in mind that extended warranties don’t cover every situation. Diagnostic testing, for example, isn’t always covered or may only be partially covered.
Finally, research the warranty provider itself. Check the company’s reputation through your state Attorney General’s office or the Better Business Bureau, and review any limitation clauses carefully so you understand exactly what’s covered.
Limitation Causes
- Procedures required in order to file a claim. (Authorizing repairs in advance, or meeting required maintenance schedules, for example).
- How repair costs are paid. (Directly by the company to the repair shop, or through reimbursement to you.)
- Whether the warranty covers items that haven’t failed, but are worn and may affect safety, driveability, or related components. (A worn and loose suspension ball joint is a good example. Even if tire wear and handling are compromised, some warranties won’t cover replacement of the ball joint unless it fails completely, even though this would cause a sudden loss of steering control!)
