How Emissions Testing Works

Please note: We do not provide emissions testing at our shop. Air Care Colorado has a list of all emission testing locations and wait times.
When your car goes in for the test here is what happens:
- A quick visual safety inspection, including a vehicle identification number (VIN) verification.
- The car is driven onto a Dynamometer. A tube is attached to the tailpipe. Then a technician runs your car at various speeds while the dynamometer records carbon monoxide, nitrogen and hydrocarbon emissions.
- Your gas cap is tested to make sure the seal is tight enough to prevent hydrocarbons (gas fumes) from escaping into the atmosphere.
- You will receive your test results immediately.
- Once your car enters the test bay it takes approximately 20 minutes to complete the process.
Quick Tip to Help Your Car Pass the Emissions Test: Be sure your car engine is warmed to operating temperature before the car is tested (10-15 minutes of driving.) “Cold” vehicles emit higher levels of pollution.

You’re driving through Boulder on a chilly Fall morning. The crisp air, the smell of leaves, and the color of a new season is breaking through. You’ve just started your commute, and as you turn onto Canyon Boulevard, the TPMS light on your dashboard lights up. Panic sets in for a moment. Is it safe to continue driving? What does this mean?
