How Emissions Testing Works

Please note: We do not provide emissions testing at our shop.  Air Care Colorado   has a list of all emission testing locations and wait times.
When your car goes in for the test here is what happens:

  1. A quick visual safety inspection, including a vehicle identification number (VIN) verification.
  2. The car is driven onto a Dynamometer. A tube is attached to the tailpipe. Then a technician runs your car at various speeds while the dynamometer records carbon monoxide, nitrogen and hydrocarbon emissions.
  3. Your gas cap is tested to make sure the seal is tight enough to prevent hydrocarbons (gas fumes) from escaping into the atmosphere.
  4. You will receive your test results immediately.
  5. Once your car enters the test bay it takes approximately 20 minutes to complete the process.

Quick Tip to Help Your Car Pass the Emissions Test:  Be sure your car engine is warmed to operating temperature before the car is tested (10-15 minutes of driving.) “Cold” vehicles emit higher levels of pollution.
