Oil Change Service in Boulder, CO

Importance of Oil Changes

Regular oil and filter changes are the most important and one of the quickest and least expensive car maintenance services available.  They ensure that the oil in your engine is doing it’s job of lubricating the engine so you don’t have metal rubbing on metal causing premature wear. At Pellman’s we believe most cars, if taken care of properly, should take you 200,000 miles or more. Frequent oil changes are key to maximizing your investment in your car.

Engine Oil Function 101

Oil works by keeping all of the metal parts in your engine lubricated so they can move freely. In addition, oil catches the dirt, acids and carbon particles that naturally occur every time you drive your car. When oil gets dirty it begins to act like sandpaper, roughing up and wearing down weak points in the engine. As it gets dirtier the oil can’t hold the byproducts in suspension and they start to build up at the same weak points, degrading the seals in your engine and plugging oil passageways.

How often should I have my oil changed?

At Pellman’s Automotive Service, we know the importance of regular oil changes from years of working on cars and from seeing the engine damage caused by dirty oil, oil sludge and low oil levels. This is why we generally recommend having your oil changed every 3 months or 3,000 – 5000 miles.  As driving style and type of oil can affect oil change intervals, we recommend discussing what is appropriate for your vehicle with our service advisors.

Does it matter what kind of oil I use?

Motor oil has changed a lot in the past ten years. Gone are the days when all you needed to know was if your car takes 10w-30 or 10W-40 oil.  You now have 3 options for most motor oils – Conventional Petroleum, Synthetic Blend and Full Synthetic.  Click here if you would like to read more about these options. As engines become more complicated, engine oils are becoming much more specialized by vehicle. Some car manufacturers may even void your warranty if you don’t use an oil that meets their specifications. (e.g., Dexos oil for 2011 and newer GM cars) We have the expertise and resources to ensure we use the correct type of oil when performing an oil change on your vehicle.  We always comply with all manufacturer guidelines to keep your warranty intact.

Oil Change Supplements We Recommend

BG MOA®
We recommend adding BG MOA® to your engine at every oil change. It’s what we do with our own vehicles. BG MOA® fortifies all qualities of engine oil, providing superior, long-lasting engine protection and helping to maintain peak engine performance. It prevents engine oil oxidation and thickening under even the most intense driving conditions. Modern engines run at increasingly higher temperatures. This, combined with the increasing regularity of stop-and-go driving, cause rapid depletion of critical oil additives. Without these protective additives, severe engine oil oxidation occurs. Oxidation reduces oil to heavy, black sludge in the crankcase, oil screens, oil passages, rocker arms and other critical areas of the engine.

Oil Change Service in Boulder, CO

Oil Change Service in Boulder, CO

No matter what vehicle you drive, you should bring your car in to Pellman’s Automotive Service every so often for an oil change. The frequency of which your vehicle should get an oil change can be found in your car’s maintenance schedule, and is dependent on the climate and conditions in Boulder and surrounding areas. The oil in your vehicle, whether it is conventional or synthetic, helps lubricate your engine’s many moving parts, but that oil breaks down over time, collecting dirt, dust and debris from your engine and the environment, so it is crucial to get an oil change as per the automaker’s recommendation. If you are in Boulder, CO or nearby, you can come to Pellman’s Automotive for an oil change today.

How often should I come in for an oil change service?

We know that Boulder residents want to take good care of their cars, and a crucial way to do that is to get a regular LOF (lube, oil, and filter) change. Oil change frequency varies based on OEM, and Boulder conditions. Although older vehicles may need an oil change every three months or 3,000 miles, the changes in modern engine design and manufacturing has created the need for better-quality oil, which lasts longer before viscosity breakdown.

The type of engine oil, your driving habits and the age and make of your vehicle, whether that be a Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Toyota, or something else, dictate when to change engine oil. Contact Pellman’s Automotive to learn when you need an oil change. One major OEM recommends that drivers with typical driving habits who own 2008 and newer models should come in for an oil change every six months or 7,500 miles (whichever comes first), and those with 2007 and older models get their oil changed every 5,000 miles or six months. Drivers with less typical driving habits should change engine oil every 5,000 miles or six months for vehicles 2008 and newer, and every 3,000 miles or three months for cars 2007 and older. Pellman’s Automotive can help find the correct frequency for your vehicle in Boulder, CO conditions.

How do I know if my vehicle needs an oil change in Boulder, CO?

While following the recommendations above is a good guide to how often you should come in to Pellman’s Automotive for an oil change service, there are several signs that your vehicle needs an immediate oil change. Contact Pellman’s Automotive at (720) 729-7039 with any questions. These include:

  • Excess vehicle exhaust.
If you see what looks like smoke trailing out of your vehicle, this probably means your motor oil has become too old to function properly, and your car needs an oil change. Pellman’s Automotive can diagnose any issue.
  • Increased engine noise.
Motor oil lubricates your engine so that all the parts work together smoothly. When the oil becomes thin, old, or poorly textured, you might hear the issue every time you drive. If you are hearing this issue, feel free to bring your vehicle to Pellman’s Automotive as soon as possible.
  • More mileage than usual.
If you have recently gone on a long-distance road trip in Boulder or beyond, you can anticipate to bring your vehicle in for an oil change sooner than usual.
  • Ticking sounds when starting.
When you start your vehicle, the engine immediately begins circulating oil. If the motor oil has an improper texture, this task may take more time and effort than it should.
  • Burnt oil smell.
This usually means your vehicle is low on oil, causing the engine to overheat.

If you are experiencing one or more of these issues and are in Boulder or surrounding areas, you can bring your car to Pellman’s Automotive for an oil change service. We can also examine your vehicle to see if additional services need to be performed, like brake repair, check engine light diagnosis, or other services.
